Do you remember that moment in front of the mirror just before you rouge your cheeks with a pinch of crimson gel, or press a soft chocolate-brown pencil to your eyes? You know, that few fleeting seconds where you wonder how a few dabs here and a stroke or two there can entirely transform the way the world perceives you? Isn’t it fascinating?
Recently, as I was preparing some concept pieces to express a particular feeling for a potential client I stumbled by happy accident upon a new challenge:
Can I change the way a simple, ordinary, inexpensive and easily found little metal box is perceived, by narrating a different visual story for it every day for 5 days?
Thus Tin Storytelling: 5 Tins, 5 Ways was born and today celebrates the second day of the challenge. Of course to get the little grey men upstairs sweating while skipping with glee, I had to outline a few rules and limitations:
- Hand illustrated touches please, for a little unique flair.
- Play with tensions-hard and soft, shiny and matte, big and small…
- Communicate a story or theme clearly-whether playful, elegant or rustic, for example.
- Try for a little unexpected or whimsy as much as possible.
- Make sure to have big, splashy, candy-colored pails of fun!
I’m really curious to see what you’re reading into each tin’s story so here’s my fun imagineering challenge for you:
Look at the pink box to the right above for a few seconds. Now close your eyes. What do you think is inside today’s box? (Be really specific-colors, shapes, even taste! )Describe vividly in the comments section below what you imagine you’ll see the moment you open the box…
Try it, it’s a fun visualizing, imagination-stretching exercise! (If you’re not getting my little stories in your inbox, sign up below, I’ll be sharing the transformation of all 5 little boxes in a summary post coming up!)
